Increase the depth of learning through our residency programs. Rhythm Kids offers residencies that can be as long, or as short, as you would like and can be adapted to meet the overall objective of your school. Check out any of the options below and call us to begin the journey!
Drum & Dance Residency:
An absolutely wonderful program where we journey through several African countries and learn songs, dances and complete drumming arrangements along the way. Children can immerse themselves in learning more about countries and we can adjust this to accommodate different ages or combined ages. We can work with your art teacher(s) to create costumes, jewelry and props (masks, etc.) that will broaden the scope of learning. One school put this all together and did two shows; one for their younger grades (preschooler and parents) and another for the parents and the community--it was AMAZING!!
Artist In-Residence:
We can bring the staff to you for an extended amount of drumming with in-depth learning for all ages. You can bring us for a few days or for a few weeks to gain a deeper overall rhythm and drumming experience. One district used us for three schools for three very different reasons.
The first school wanted an authentic, in-depth study of African rhythms and cultural enrichment. We brought in a master drummer, taught authentic drumming parts and finished out a week of workshops with a large community concert that celebrated black history month. The second school brought us in for a theme-based inclusion drum circle unit that was customized for their specific needs. We created a school chant and did a drum circle residency that included staff training and workshops for every grade. Rhythm Kids did a school-wide assembly at the end of two weeks that lifted everyone's sprit. The third school wanted combination of instruction (African-style) with drum circles and staff training. At the end of this one-week, outdoor residency, this school was rocking on the drums and local neighbors would frequent the area with young kids, dogs and friends to just listen with smiles on their faces. It brought an understanding to the students of how, in ancient days (before cells phones!), villages connected with other villages--a lesson that many of these young remembered and mentioned on their feedback forms.
Drum Circle Residency Program:
More and more people are understanding the connection that drumming bring to groups. This connection is unspoken offers everyone, staff included, the chance to be respected and understood on the same level. In the drum circle, there are no teachers, students, principal or special needs students, we are all just people making spontaneous music together. Rhythm Kids can guide you to make this a part of your everyday school life. Once school initiated a morning drum circle time where Rhythm Kids rhythms and concepts where utilized before learning began. This special needs class went on to perform for the whole school and received a standing ovation as they TOTALLY ROCKED THE HOUSE!!! There were, and still are, amazing!
